Christmas time is expensive enough, so the last thing you need is a large rise in your Energy costs! We’ve put together our top tips for how you can save money over the Christmas period.

  • Switch to LED Christmas Lights- LED Christmas lights use 90 per cent less energy than incandescent. If we all swapped a string of lights for LEDs we would save £13 million during the 12 days of Christmas alone. Replacing all standard bulbs and halogen spotlights in your home with energy saving light bulbs could save you £35 a year.
  • Use Fiber Optic Decorations-Fiber optic trees and decorations are the ultimate in energy efficiency. In most cases, they use a single light bulb located at the base of the unit to light the entire decoration
  • Limit the Time Lights are On- Wait until dark to turn on your Christmas lights and then, turn them off before you go to bed. Six hours or less of daily use is a good goal to aim for. If you often forget to turn lights off, then set a timer so that they will turn off automatically!
  • Turn Off Room Lights When the Tree is Lit- The lights on your Christmas tree should provide more than enough lighting to navigate around the room. So turn the room lights off and get into the Christmas spirit!
  • Keep in the heat- Draught-proof your windows and doors this Christmas and save between £25 to 35 a year. About half of households still need to draught-proof their windows and doors, but collectively it could save the UK around £365m a year. You might also be able to bring warmth more easily into the room by moving furniture away from radiators. Try to move bulky objects away from sources of heat, but ask someone to help if it’s too heavy.
  • Turn the Thermostat Down When You Have Guests- 70% of the cost of your energy bill is a result of heating. When you have guests around, the extra bodies in the house means extra warmth for you, meaning you can turn your thermostat down! Reducing the temperature by just 1 degree can save up to £75 a year in a typical home, so just think how much it can save in your care home, and you probably won’t even notice a difference!
  • Switch Energy Supplier- If you haven’t switched your energy supplier in the last 3 years, there’s a chance you’ll be paying more than you need for your energy! If you don’t take action when your current contract expires, you will be moved onto the company’s standard tariff which will not always be its cheapest. You probably have plenty on already over Christmas, which is why energy brokers are able to find you the cheapest deals and do the hard work for you!
